David Boyer

My name is David Boyer and I make wind-driven kinetic sculptures. Six years ago I began the process of inventing these sculptures. I use the term invent, because that’s pretty much what I’ve had to do. My current body of work is the result of a long and sometimes difficult process of experimentation.

Why kinetic sculpture? Simply put, I’ve always had a fascination with things that move. Motion equates to life. When the wind blows and my sculptures dance and twirl, it almost seems like they are alive.

Many of my pieces look like old rusting artifacts. This is no accident. As an addicted desert explorer, I've always loved the color and texture of old weathered metal. To create this look I often use old found metals. Where this is not possible, I age new metals using special proprietary techniques.

In addition to my "aged" sculptures, I have recently been creating pieces using stainless steel. My new sculpture "Bonsai" on display at the Nevada Museum Art is an example of this.

Since January 2003, I have been a fulltime artist. The most notable thing that has happened since then is my receiving a commission with the City of Reno, Nevada. The commission was for the building and installation of 63 kinetic wind sculptures for the City’s “Arts and Culture District”. You can see these sculptures on the light poles on Virginia Street, First Street, and Sierra Street. As an artist, being able to enrich the city in which I call home has been my greatest achievement.
