Opal Glass

Johnny & Darlene Camp's dedication to glassblowing is evident in the excellent quality of their work. Their combined 13 years of expertise as hands on artists, designers, and fabricators have enabled them to achieve intimate works of art, as well as large scale commissions.Glass poses as a seductive medium that continues to excite and inspire them everyday.

Each piece is a free hand expression of the excitement and danger only found in a glassblowing studio. At a time when many designers/artists are leaving the crafting of their designs to apprentices in a factory style setting, it is becoming more rare for the designer to continue as the maker. or Johnny and Darlene working directly with the glass is not only the time of inspiration, but a time when they can focus on only one thing, the glass, and leave the rest of the world behind. Johnny and Darlene work together as a team creating a wide variety of hand blown glass, ranging from traditional forms to contemporary styles.

Opal Art Glass creates exquisite glass by mixing soda ash and sand. The soda ash and sand are introduced and melted in the furnace at 2400 degrees.Glass is then kept molten in the furnace at 2100 degrees, they preheat the tips of stainless steel rods and pipes (depending on if they are making a paperweight, or blown vessel). Then they gather the molten glass on the end (imagine winding up honey on the end of a chopstick). They use hand tools to manipulate and cut the glass (similar to blacksmithing tools). They create different designs by adding colored glass, gold, silver, and etc. They have the option of either: casing their designs to capture the design inside or leaving the designs on the surface. After the glass has reached its finished form, it must be placed in a 930 degree fahrenheit annealing oven. Once the day of producing is over, the oven is cooled at a rate of one degree a minute. The pieces are then removed, ground and polished. Each piece is then inspected, signed and dated.

Johnny and Darlene will never stop learning: the possibilities with glass are endless.
