My name is Mimi Patrick. I was kidnapped by Gypsies as a young child and brought to the Comstock. My role within the Gypsy family was to be a pickpocket on the boardwalk in Virginia City, Nevada relieving unsuspecting tourists of their wallets. After numerous run-ins with the law and a strong suggestion that I learn something more productive, I was allowed to learn pottery from the last remaining Chinese potter on the Comstock. This very ancient gentleman practiced his craft in one of the side ravines down Six Mile Canyon and passed on his considerable knowledge to me. Although the exact location is now lost to history, pottery shards can be found all over the Comstock. I learned how to make pottery and fire kilns from him. A tendency to pyromania was very helpful in the learning the craft. My studio is located at 1631 Main Street in Gold Hill (1 mile south of Virginia City and 25 miles from Reno) in the high desert mountains of the Comstock Lode. Although my primary work is with clay, I also work in wood producing folk art sculpture with found objects. They incorporate driftwood, seashells, scrap wood and other found objects. The pieces go together almost by themselves. Most of the pieces have a humorous slant. I have been producing clay vessels for nearly 40 years and working with wood for about 20 years. All of the clay work is high fired and is food safe. My favorite quote is from The Potter and His Children by Robert Caples: "We're shaped by the things we shape - it's as simple as that."
