Nanas were the creation of Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002), well known French avant-garde artist and spokesperson for the women of the world. These large, voluptuous and brightly painted female figures were made originally in papier mâché and later in polyester. The first Nana was created in 1965 and in 1966 she took part in an exhibition at Moderna Muséet in Stockholm, where a huge Nana (30m long, 10m wide, 6m high) lying on her back was erected.
